Week 7 - Rare Plant Surveys

Updated: Jul 27, 2023

July 5 and July 6.

With the holiday weekend recognizing the Fourth of July extending into Monday and Tuesday, the rest of the week we worked alongside the Botany crew at the Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests & Pawnee Grassland (USFS, ARP).

On Wednesday and Thursday, we visited a site in Nederland to conduct rare plant surveys. These surveys were being conducted to evaluate whether or not there are rare plants in the area in preparation for trail reconstruction and expansion within the boundary lines provided. We utilized pedestrian transect lines (PDLs) to survey in order to efficiently cover as much ground as we could while also being thorough enough to be confident in our results.

We ended our Tuesday off with some plant identification practice using a dichotomous key with some plants that we found during our surveys. We chose a few Asters which are notoriously challenging to key out, which was great practice!
