Week 9 -Rare Plant Surveys and Fish Hatchery Tour

July 17 - July 20.

This week we worked alongside the Botany crew at the Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests & Pawnee Grassland (USFS, ARP).

On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, I went out with the Botany crew to conduct rare plant surveys. We spent our days at the Magnolia Trails in Nederland, CO in order to determine whether or not trail restoration and expansion can be done based on the presence of rare plants in the area. We conducted Pedestrian Transect Surveys along the existing trails provided.

On Thursday, we had the opportunity to tour the Watson/Bellvue Fish Hatchery provided by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). Here, we saw the production of fish for recreational purposes. We learned how these fish are produced, what their life looks like at the hatchery, and how they are dispersed and stocked into local lakes for sport fishing.

After the tour, a few of us went with the Botany crew to check on a Yellow Lady's Slipper site where they were once poached. Yellow Lady's Slipper (Cypripedium parviflorum) is a sensitive orchid species on the forest. Cameras have been installed since the poaching, but the crew tends to the site weekly to make sure there are no new holes.
