Week 10 - Post Fire Survey & Seed Collection

July 24 & July 25.

This week we worked alongside the Aquatic Wildlife and Fisheries crew as well as the Botany crew at the Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests & Pawnee Grassland (USFS, ARP).

On Monday, we hiked up to a control site to compare the habitat and fish population to that of a burn site. We did this in order to see the affects that the wildfire had on the ecosystem in the area. To create a population survey, we conducted electrofishing and completed a water quality test using a YSI.

On Tuesday, we practiced seed collecting in the Pawnee National Grassland with some of the CNHP botany crew. We learned the proper technique to collect grass seed with a goal of 10,000-20,000 seeds for the day. The grass species we collected from was called Blue Grama (Bouteloua gracilis).
